Biosolvents: change to sustainable chemicals

Concern for the use of safer, more sustainable chemical products is a growing trend in the industry and indeed worldwide generally. This change is brought about owing to the application of stricter regulations and increasing awareness among customers with regard to the use of products that are less hazardous to handle.

Organic solvents that have been traditionally used will gradually be replaced with safer, sustainable alternatives that are less harmful to the environment.

The company GALACTIC, with headquarters in Belgium, produces biosolvents derived from lactic acid (lactic acid esters) that can be considered safe compared to more traditional solvents.
As far as the environment is concerned, they are biodegradable solvents as lactic acid is produced by fermentation of sugar, a renewable source; accordingly, they are sustainable and have a substantially lower carbon footprint than oil-derived solvents.

GALACTIC’s range of biosolvents includes lactic acid esters with differing size molecules. As lactic acid is esterified using alcohols with a larger molecular weight, an ester with a larger molecular weight is obtained. As a result, the ester has a higher boiling point and reduced polarity, making it possible to contemplate changing traditional solvents for biosolvents of similar characteristics.

GALACTIC’s brand names are GALASTER for individual esters and GALASOLV for mixtures of different esters. These are polar protic biosolvents that contain oxygenated groups. They have high boiling points, making them practical as drying retardants in solvent-based coatings. They are also used as coalescers in water-borne formulations.

Many traditional solvents can be replaced with these green biosolvents. They have the following fields of application:

  • Coatings
  • Cosmetics
  • Industrial cleaning
  • Plant protection products
