Improve the properties of your composite

The Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) process involves the production of a composite material based on polyester or epoxy resin in paste form, combined with glass fibre, fillers, and additives. This mixture is compacted between two film sheets to maintain the desired thickness. The resin-fibre mixture is then moulded at high temperature and under compression to achieve the intended shape. One of the key advantages of this method is that the fibres are fully integrated and blended into the resin.

SMC is used for producing large volumes of parts with complex geometries and a smooth surface finish. Common examples include automotive components and parts of electrical enclosures.

Our LUVATOL thickening pastes, based on magnesium oxide, enable precise control of viscosity in polyester-based SMC processes. These are dust-free additives that are easy to incorporate. Certain grades even comply with food contact regulations.

In addition, TRENNFILM films, composed of polyethylene/polyamide/polyethylene layers, are used within the same SMC system to compact the resin and other components, providing high tensile strength and excellent release properties.
