Pearlescent pigments are a type of special-effect pigment that reflects light in such a way as to produce a visual effect similar to mother-of-pearl. In addition, iridescent pearlescent pigments can create optical effects reminiscent of butterfly wings. Owing to their ability to deliver attractive and unique visual finishes, these pigments have a wide range of industrial applications.

What are they?
They are pigments composed of microscopic particles (generally mica coated with metallic oxides such as titanium dioxide or iron oxide) that reflect and refract light. This produces an optical effect where colours shift according to the angle of view or the lighting.

Difference between pearlescent and iridescent

  • Pearlescent: Provides a soft, pearly lustre, akin to that of a pearl or seashell. Pearlescent pigments are available in a wide range of colours and particle sizes: pearl white, gold, bronze, metallic shades and more.
  • Iridescent or interference: These pigments create more dramatic optical effects, similar to soap bubbles or a peacock feather. They show pronounced colour changes depending on the angle of the light or the observer.

How do they work?
When white light strikes a pearlescent pigment, part of that light is reflected from the top surface while another portion penetrates deeper layers, where it is further reflected and refracted even deeper.

Interference occurs when light reflects from different layers within the pigment: some wavelengths (colours) are reinforced while others are cancelled out, depending on the coating thickness and the angle of view.

Advantages of pearlescent pigments:

  • Enhanced visual appearance without the need for additional paint.
  • Increased perceived value of the product.
  • High thermal and chemical stability.
  • Wide variety of colours and effects.
  • Range of particle sizes, enabling either subtle effects or glitter finishes.
  • Non-toxic and safe.

Where are they used in plastics?

  • Injection-moulded parts where a luxurious, high-quality finish is desired, such as premium cosmetic packaging.
  • Toys and decorative items for bright or colour-shifting finishes
