Synergistic flame retardant additives for thermoplastics

Synergistic flame retardant additives for thermoplastics

Monday, 7 September, 2026

Thermoplastics are high-performance, versatile and cost-effective materials widely used in applications that must comply with stringent fire safety regulations. To meet these requirements, flame retardants are incorporated into the formulation.

For many years, the market has been steadily moving towards halogen-free flame retardant systems for both technical and environmental reasons. These systems are typically based on phosphorus, nitrogen or inorganic compounds, such as metal hydroxides. However, they often require high flame retardant loadings to achieve the desired level of fire protection. This can make processing more challenging and may adversely affect the mechanical properties of the finished compound.

BYK offers organoclay-based synergistic additives that enhance the performance of halogen-free flame retardant systems. By increasing the efficiency of the flame retardants, these additives make it possible to reduce the overall flame retardant loading in the compound, resulting in improved processability while enhancing material performance.

Without synergistic additive:
ATH content: 58%
Thickness: 3 mm
Fails UL 94
With BYK additive:
ATH content: 53%
Additive dosage: 5%
Thickness: 3 mm
Achieves UL 94 V-0 Classification

All three additives are available in powder form. BYK also offers a pre-dispersed grade, BYK-MAX® FR 4145, supplied in a polyolefin-compatible carrier. Available as pellets, it enables easier incorporation into the compound.
