Matting without secondary impacts in UV systems

Matting without secondary impacts in UV systems

Tuesday, 15 May, 2018

Are you having issues with chemical resistance? Do your surfaces suffer poor scratch resistance after adding a matting agent?

Now thanks to polymer-modified silicas these problems can be prevented. These micronised silica particles are lightly hydrophobic and reactive on the surface, enabling them to react covalently with the coating. Thanks to the polymer modification they are particularly suitable for UV curing.

Comindex distributes three grades by the manufacturer Finma Chemie:

  1. Finma S-H6 with a particle size of 6.2 µm
  2. Finma S-H8 with a particle size of 7.6 µm
  3. Finma S-H11 with a particle size of 11.0 µm

All the various references are suitable for UV curing of coatings on wood or plastic using a water-borne or solvent-based system. Finma S-H11 is also recommended for alkyd resin-based systems without cobalt catalysts where it is particularly beneficial compared to traditional silicas as it prevents drying problems.
