Bio-solvents for the agrochemical industry

Bio-solvents for the agrochemical industry

Monday, 14 January, 2019

We at Comindex have a line of sustainable bio-solvents based on lactic acid for the agrochemical sector. These are esters derived from lactic acid, obtained from the fermentation of sugar and corn syrup. The resulting products are natural and biodegradable with a very low CO2 footprint.

The main uses of bio-solvents in the agrochemical industry are:

  • Solvents and adjuvants: to increase the biological activity of active substances
  • Synthesis of specific active ingredients used in agrochemicals
  • Improvement of wetting properties depending on the type and concentration
  • They can be used as surfactants (improving the extensibility of the active substance in the leaf of the plant)

Given the environmental restrictions on the use of organic solvents, substitution for lactic acid esters, with very low toxicity and biodegradation into harmless compounds is especially desirable.

The primary advantages compared to normal solvents are:

  • Higher boiling point
  • High solvating power
  • Low toxicological and ecotoxicological profile
