Chromium-free anti-rust primers: LM-30

Chromium-free anti-rust primers: LM-30

Monday, 14 October, 2019

Historically, the formulation of anti-corrosion paints has virtually exclusively involved the use of chromates as anti-corrosion pigments, particularly for steel protection.

Current restrictions on the use of these pigments extends the field of action to ion exchange anti-rust pigments as an alternative to these hexavalent chromium salts.

We at Comindex are committed to this technology and are taking on the following challenge: corrosion prevention.

For what purpose?

  • To meet the environmental requirements of nowadays.
  • To obtain equivalent or improved performance compared to chromic pigments.
  • To enhance performance on different substrates of anti-corrosive coatings.

How?

  • Using our pigment from the nanoLWE series: LM-30.

It is mainly composed of calcium ion-exchange amorphous silica gel.

The mechanism of operation is as follows:

An exchange of calcium ions in the coating for hydrogen ions on the substrate takes place.

This can neutralise acidic substances, maintain a high pH value and prevent the substrate from eroding.

Meanwhile, the calcium ions can be combined with the metal oxide film to form a protective layer to reduce corrosion.

This makes it possible to extend the service life of the steel substrate.

Why use LM-30? It offers:

  • Long-acting protection.
  • Direct metal coating.
  • Lower film thickness compared to traditional primers.
  • Environmental protection.
  • Low toxicity (chromium-free and without toxic and heavy metals).
