Corrosion inhibitors: don’t take a gamble with rust

Corrosion inhibitors: don’t take a gamble with rust

Thursday, 13 November, 2025

Corrosion processes occur as a result of an oxidation–reduction reaction in humid environments. The end result is the formation of various oxides that degrade the metal surface, compromising its strength and mechanical properties.

This degradation leads to loss of adhesion between coating layers, the formation of cracks, leaks caused by metal deterioration and, in severe cases, structural failures and total substrate degradation.

What’s the solution? How can we prevent it?

By using the corrosion inhibitors developed by our represented company Labema.

Comindex distributes its liquid corrosion inhibitors in aqueous phase to prevent corrosion both in metal packaging —since weak points may remain susceptible to corrosion even when the surface is protected with varnish— and on the metal substrates themselves.

These products have multiple applications in paints, varnishes, lubricants, antifreeze, coolants, water-soluble oils and detergents.

At Comindex we work to offer our clients a broad range of corrosion inhibitors, grouped into three main families:

AB RUST® Y EMADOX®: Flash rust inhibitors based on traditional chemistry (fossil carbon).

These products provide temporary protection of metals (iron, cast iron, carbon steel, aluminium, etc.) when the coating in contact with the metal is in a “liquid” state and the water in the formulation is evaporating.

Their action mechanisms are:

  • Adsorption, creating a chemical barrier.
  • Passivation, reinforcing the formation of a homogeneous and insulating oxide layer.
  • Formation of insoluble compounds on the surface.

All of this is supported by an alkaline pH, which slows the corrosion rate and neutralises acidic by-products. As a result, we are able to attain the following types of protection:

  • In-can protection (inside the container).
  • Anti-flash rust protection, preventing the appearance of rust stains on metal substrates during the drying process when applying aqueous products.

VEGERUST®: Flash rust inhibitors based on sustainable chemistry (bio-based carbon). They offer comparable results to the previous range, at no additional cost, while reflecting a clear commitment to environmental preservation and the promotion of more sustainable chemistry.

EMARUST®: Liquid corrosion inhibitors providing long-lasting protection, even on dry paint film. They can be used independently, as an alternative to anticorrosive pigments, or in combination with them, creating a synergistic effect.
