Eliminate odours in thermoplastic compounds

Eliminate odours in thermoplastic compounds

Wednesday, 8 April, 2026

The manufacture or use of plastic products with certain odours can be unpleasant and even undesirable. While fragrances are currently available to mask some odours, they are not long-lasting and do not always provide satisfactory results.

At Comindex, we offer the new TER-SORB MB, odour-absorbing additives for plastic applications based on zinc ricinoleate.

Zinc ricinoleate is a zinc salt of ricinoleic acid, a fatty acid present in castor oil. Its chemical structure enables it to trap and retain molecules responsible for unpleasant odours.

Thanks to TER-SORB MB, odour-causing molecules are permanently bound to zinc ricinoleate –an already activated additive– resulting in a long-lasting effect. It is particularly effective in compounds containing nitrogen (amines, ammonia) and sulphur (sulphides), which are typically associated with odours such as sweat, fish, urine or rotten eggs.

In polymer processing, undesirable odours may originate from the use of pigments, certain additives, recycled polymers, or vulcanisation processes.

TER-SORB MB odour-control additives offer high thermal stability, making them ideal for plastic processing. Depending on the polymer system, different grades are available:

  • TER-SORB MB-50-EAA – EAA carrier
  • TER-SORB MB-50-EVA – EVA carrier
  • TER-SORB MB-50-HDPE – HDPE carrier
  • TER-SORB MB-50-PP – PP carrier
  • TER-SORB MB-50-PVC – PVC carrier

TER-SORB MB is recommended for masterbatch producers, compounders, sheet manufacturers and recyclers.
