Flow for epoxy flooring

Flow for epoxy flooring

Thursday, 8 October, 2026

In self-levelling epoxy flooring applications, system viscosity is a key factor in ensuring correct application, good substrate wetting and a uniform finish.

Formulators are looking for solutions that improve flow without compromising the final properties of the coating.

Epotec® RD 136 reactive diluent from Aditya Birla is an effective solution for reducing the viscosity of high-viscosity epoxy resins. It also facilitates application, improves levelling and helps achieve more uniform surfaces, particularly in industrial and decorative flooring.

Its use addresses the growing market demand for epoxy systems that offer improved processability, efficiency and a well-balanced technical performance, particularly in the construction and coatings sectors.

From a chemical perspective, Epotec® RD 136 is a benzyl alcohol monoglycidyl ether. Its structure combines a benzyl group with a reactive epoxy group and, as it contains only one epoxy group per molecule, it is a monofunctional reactive diluent.

Reactive diluents are key components in epoxy formulations, as they make it possible to adjust rheology and reduce system viscosity while participating in the curing reaction and becoming incorporated into the epoxy matrix, unlike conventional solvents.

The main properties of Epotec® RD 136 include:
Viscosity at 25 °C: max. 6 cP
Epoxy equivalent weight (EEW): 170–190 g/eq
Epoxy value: 5.26–5.88 eq/kg
Density at 25 °C: 1.08 g/ml

Epotec® RD 136 is a low-viscosity reactive diluent designed to:

  • Improve dilution efficiency.
  • Reduce the viscosity of epoxy formulations.
  • Promote improved levelling in flooring applications.
  • Improve application properties and product spreadability.
  • Maintain good mechanical properties in the final system.

In flooring systems, its incorporation helps eliminate roller marks, improves deaeration and contributes to more uniform finishes – all critical factors in self-levelling floors.

It also provides a good balance between processability, thermal resistance and final performance, making it a versatile option for formulators in the coatings, adhesives and construction sectors.

This diluent offers good thermal resistance and helps maintain good mechanical properties, particularly when compared with long-chain aliphatic reactive diluents.

Epotec® RD 136 makes it possible to optimise the viscosity of epoxy systems and improve levelling in flooring applications without compromising final performance. It is an effective solution for developing formulations that are easier to apply and more robust – a key tool for high-quality epoxy flooring.
