Formulating flame-retardant coatings

Formulating flame-retardant coatings

Monday, 8 September, 2025

New types of intumescent coatings for steel structures are becoming increasingly important, as they provide more time to escape in the event of a fire. Steel structures can buckle under the intense heat of a blaze and may even collapse due to the loss of strength.

In conjunction with Presafer —one of our represented companies— we are now able to introduce PreniphorTM EPFR-APP (II) halogen-free flame-retardant additives, which are more environmentally friendly than standard flame-retardant materials available on the market.

Intumescent coatings formulated with the PreniphorTM EPFR-APP (II) series ensure the safety of both people and property thanks to their excellent properties. They have already been widely used in various types of buildings, including airports, stadiums, schools, hospitals, factories and more.

PreniphorTM EPFR-APP (II) can be applied in coatings, textiles and thermostable resins. It is an ammonium polyphosphate (APP)-based material with improved performance compared to conventional APP.

Key features of PreniphorTM EPFR-APP (II) include the following:

  • High degree of polymerisation
  • Good weather resistance
  • Excellent crystalline structure
  • Low content of low-polymerisation substances
  • Excellent thermal stability

There are different grades available depending on particle size and surface treatment:

  • Preniphor EPFR-APP217: Highly recommended for intumescent coatings. Standard, most cost-effective grade.
  • Preniphor EPFR-APP222H: Highly recommended for intumescent coatings. Also suitable for thermostable resins (epoxy, UP, PU, etc.). Standard grade with smaller particle size.
  • Preniphor EPFR-APP224: Highly recommended for intumescent coatings. Also suitable for thermostable resins (epoxy, UP, PU, etc.). Standard grade with larger particle size.
  • Preniphor EPFR-APP262 (encapsulated with melamine–formaldehyde): Highly recommended for intumescent coatings, textile coatings, and thermostable resins (epoxy, UP, PU, etc.) in applications with strict water-resistance requirements—for example, exterior applications.
  • Preniphor EPFR-Q7: Highly recommended for its very fine particle size, making it ideal where transparent intumescent coatings are required, such as intumescent varnishes for wood.

We can provide a range of standard formulations to help you develop your coatings, together with Presafer’s support in conducting various tests to demonstrate their flame-retardant performance.
