How to choose the right epoxy resin

How to choose the right epoxy resin

Tuesday, 10 March, 2026

A practical guide for formulators and coatings technicians.

Epoxy resin largely determines the final properties of a system: strength, adhesion, gloss or flexibility. Selecting the right base allows both product performance and application properties to be optimised.

At Comindex, together with our partner Aditya Birla, we support formulators in selecting the most suitable Epotec resin for each application, combining technical expertise with strong market knowledge.

  1. Bisphenol-A resins – balance and versatility
These are the most widely used resins thanks to their excellent balance of properties, ease of use and competitive cost. They offer high adhesion, good chemical resistance and excellent gloss, making them the standard choice for industrial coatings, adhesives and flooring systems.
Their compatibility with a wide range of curing agents allows highly versatile and reliable formulations to be developed, both in solvent-based and waterborne systems.

  2. Bisphenol-F resins – flow and chemical performance
These resins exhibit lower viscosity and greater chemical resistance than Bisphenol-A types, making them an excellent choice for high-solids coatings or solvent-free systems.
They also show a lower tendency to crystallise and good storage stability. They are ideal for formulations that require enhanced durability and chemical resistance without compromising processability.

  3. Novolac resins – maximum chemical and thermal resistance
These resins stand out on account of their high crosslink density, which provides outstanding resistance to heat, solvents and corrosion.
They are widely used in anticorrosive coatings, tanks, metal structures and industrial flooring exposed to demanding conditions. They are the preferred option when long-term protection and dimensional stability are required, even at high temperatures.

  4. Reactive diluents – flow and system control
Reactive diluents help reduce formulation viscosity and improve application properties while participating in the curing reaction without generating VOC emissions
Depending on their functionality, they can increase flexibility or adjust the impact resistance of the final coating, providing additional formulation versatility.
They are essential for obtaining systems that are easier to handle, more sustainable and better balanced in terms of performance and processability.

Each application requires its own balance between processability, resistance and performance. Selecting the right resin is key to formulating reliable, durable systems tailored to the requirements of each industry.
