Nepheline syenite: a high-performance functional filler

Mineral fillers play a fundamental role in the formulation of many paints and plastic materials. Calcium carbonate, talc, kaolin and silica are commonly used. However, the growing demand for improved mechanical, optical and durability properties has driven the adoption of higher-value functional minerals. Among these, nepheline syenite has established itself as one of the most effective functional fillers for paints and plastics.

Nepheline syenite is a naturally occurring sodium and potassium aluminosilicate with a Mohs hardness of 6. Thanks to its relatively low refractive index, which closely matches that of the most commonly used resins, together with its high brightness, it is ideally suited to applications requiring superior optical properties and excellent colour stability.

In paints and coatings, nepheline syenite is used in applications requiring outstanding scratch and abrasion resistance, excellent UV resistance and long-term weathering stability. Additional benefits include low oil absorption, excellent dispersibility, high whiteness, outstanding chemical stability and effective matting performance in clear varnishes without compromising transparency.

Its principal applications include interior and exterior decorative paints, wood coatings, industrial coatings, anti-corrosion coatings and powder coatings.

In thermoplastics, nepheline syenite is used as a functional filler that combines mechanical reinforcement with enhanced optical properties and improved weather resistance. It also contributes to heat retention in greenhouse films. It can partially replace calcium carbonate or talc where higher performance is required and is suitable for a wide range of polymers, including PE, PP, PVC, ABS, PA and thermoplastic elastomers.

Nepheline syenite provides a technically superior alternative to calcium carbonate and talc in applications requiring an optimum combination of mechanical performance, optical stability and long-term durability.
