Over 100 years manufacturing linseed oil

Thursday, 13 May, 2021

Linseed oil is one of the oldest resins used in the world. In addition to being a 100% plant-derived product, it also possesses excellent properties for coatings:

  • High gloss
  • Low viscosity
  • Air drying
  • Cost-effective
  • Hydrophobic
  • Hydrolysis-stable

Alberdingk Boley has been producing linseed oil for over 100 years and we at Comindex would like to introduce you to the various products:

  • Alberdingk Double Boiled Linseed Oil: It is obtained from crude linseed oil via a process of drying and polymerisation. A manganese-based drying agent is added, avoiding the use of cobalt drying agents. It is ready to use, with barely any requirement for additives. It offers excellent adhesion to problematic wooden surfaces such as olive wood.Examples of applications include wood care products, high PVC paints for timber houses and window putties.
  • Alberdingk Winterized Linseed Oil: Through a process of refining crude linseed oil – degumming, neutralisation, bleaching and deodorising – we obtain the refined grade: Refined Linseed Oil. Subsequent cooling and filtration enables the Winterized grade to be obtained, which is much clearer and does not become cloudy under 10ºC.Applications are the same as for Double Boiled Linseed Oil, although this product is recommended when a higher level of purity/clarity in the finish is sought.
  • Alberdingk Linseed Stand Oil: This product is produced after the Refined Linseed Oil undergoes a thermal polymerisation process in the absence of oxygen. It has different grades, depending on the level of polymerisation, with different viscosities. It has excellent pigment wetting properties as well as improved chemical resistance. It is clear in colour, has low acidity and features superior drying properties. It is used for surface coatings – such and paints and varnishes – alkyd resins, inks and pigment pastes.
  • Alberdingk Blown Linseed Oil: This grade is obtained when the Refined Linseed Oil is subjected to a high-temperature oxidative polymerisation process. It is very similar to Linseed Stand Oil. It features improved wetting properties and it stands out for use in quick-drying clear varnishes with drying agents.
