Painting in extreme conditions

Painting in extreme conditions

Thursday, 8 October, 2026

Ambient temperature and relative humidity play a major role in paint application, particularly in determining drying times during wetter and colder months. They can have the following effects:

  • Low temperatures: Cold conditions slow down paint drying, increasing the risk of contamination. In addition, slow curing can impair the adhesion and resistance of the coating.
  • High relative humidity:
  1. Delayed drying: Excess moisture in the air hinders evaporation and increases drying time.
  2. Finish defects: Orange peel, cratering, loss of gloss, discolouration, and many other effects impact the appearance of the coating and can reduce its durability and resistance.

The Alberdingk Boley fast-drying system, based on controlled coagulation, combines ALBERDINGK® AC 2008 (a high-solids, APEO-free pure acrylic dispersion) with ALBERDINGK® ALBOrapid 11 (a coagulating polymer) for paints and renders that set rapidly under challenging conditions, with relative humidity above 80% and temperatures as low as +5 °C.

Key characteristics:

  • Excellent weather resistance.
  • High colour stability.
  • Good adhesion to a wide range of substrates.
  • Early water (rain) resistance.

When adding Alberdingk® ALBOrapid 11 VP, the following points should be taken into consideration:

  • Before adding it, the pH must be raised to a minimum of 9.5 using ammonia. ALBERDINGK® ALBOrapid 11 VP should be added immediately before application.
  • Do not mix it with other resins, particularly those with a pH below 9.
  • The pH of the substrate can affect performance. The ideal pH should be around 7.
  • At higher pH values, drying time increases.

Applications:

  • Architectural paints.
  • Façade paints.
  • Exterior masonry paints.
  • Tennis court paints.
  • Renders.

ALBERDINGK® AC 2008 makes it possible to overcome the challenging conditions of high relative humidity and low temperatures frequently encountered during application, particularly in the winter months.
