Stain blocking paints

Stain blocking paints

The NECOWEL 4300, 4350, and 4400 grades are alkyd emulsions functionally modified with cationic groups. These emulsions are VOC-free, cosolvent-free, and APEO-free.

In contrast to conventional resin dispersions, which lack inherent stain-blocking capability, the cationically modified NECOWEL resins fix with anionic contaminants, preventing their migration to the surface.

Incorporating patented technology, these modified emulsions facilitate the formulation of interior wall and wood coatings that exhibit minimal shrinkage and excellent application properties.

They offer favourable carrier wetting performance, ease of formulation, and compatibility with other formulation components, while also ensuring safe production conditions.

ASK Chemicals has successfully incorporated cationic groups into an alkyd emulsion matrix, resulting in a stable paint system with enhanced resistance to staining caused by anionic compounds, such as water-soluble markers, tannins, and phenolic substances from wood substrates. Cationic contaminants, including nicotine, are also effectively neutralised and fixed by the acidic functional groups present in the resin structure.

Grades are available:

  • NECOWEL 4350 is a variant of 4300 that is free from formaldehyde.
  • NECOWEL 4300/4350 both demonstrate superior chemical resistance and increased wet-scrub durability.
  • NECOWEL 4400, formulated from saturated fatty acids, is non-yellowing and odourless. It dries faster.

These emulsions are suitable for use as both primer and topcoat. Primers based on NECOWEL 4000 series resins exhibit excellent drying behaviour and allow overcoating with standard paints, without the risk of bleed-through from water-soluble substances.

The alkyd emulsions in the NECOWEL 4000 range establish a barrier layer that effectively immobilises dyes within the coating matrix, thereby inhibiting further migration through the applied film.
