STP adhesives and sealants: use them and banish problems

STP adhesives and sealants: use them and banish problems

Friday, 14 June, 2019

One of the latest technological innovations in the world of high performance adhesives and sealants are silane-terminated polymers (STPs), distributed by Comindex. They are an effective, safe and environmentally friendly alternative to adhesives and sealants based on polyurethane and other technologies.

STP polymers are formed by a polyether chain terminated with silanes, and have the following chemical structure:

The active siloxane groups at the end of the chain principally provide chemical reactivity and adhesive properties to the polymer.

The central polyether chains provide the polymer with its main physical properties, such as elasticity. They also enhance the adhesive performance of the end product

Once applied, polymer curing takes place by means of moisture reaction and a process of chain polycondensation.

STP polymers have the following performance improvements compared to polyurethane-based (PU) polymers:

  • Safe and environmentally friendly products due to a lack of isocyanates and solvents in their formulation
  • Low catalyst demand, either with or without tin
  • Excellent weathering resistance, excellent chemical and UV resistance (yellowing due to outdoor exposure)
  • Rapid curing and, unlike PU, blister-free
  • Cured products are non-tacky
  • Resistant to leaching in exterior applications
  • Excellent adhesion without the need for prior priming
  • They can be painted, making subsequent painting work possible without delamination

STP polymers are mainly used in the following sectors:

  • Construction
  • Professional
  • Household (DIY)
  • Industrial
