Can infections transmitted through plastic toys be prevented?

Friday, 13 January, 2023

Children, especially young children, are very susceptible to infection by different microorganisms. And the exchange and shared use of toys, which they receive in large amounts at this time of the year, help to spread infections.

To try to protect them, one solution is the inclusion of antimicrobial additives in the formulation of toys.

And Comindex presents you with its antimicrobial additive, BACTIBLOCK, for this application.

What is BACTIBLOCK?

BACTIBLOCK is an antimicrobial additive whose active ingredient is the silver ion. This is adsorbed on a clay or amorphous glass surface, therefore achieving a controlled and homogenous release of the active ingredient which increases the durability of its antimicrobial effect.

Why should BACTIBLOCK be included in a plastic toy?

Aside from the already mentioned long-lasting effect of its efficacy, which enables protection over long periods of time, another clear advantage is its multi-target effect.

Its effectiveness is proven against a large variety of microorganisms – bacteria, viruses, fungi and yeasts – for example: Escherichia coli, Legionella pneumophila, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, SalmonelIa enterica, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus and AspergiIIus niger, among others.

In addition, BACTIBLOCK is approved for use in the plastic toy industry – conforming to EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 “Safety of Toys” – after passing a technical evaluation carried out by external laboratories. This requirement is essential in order to ensure safe use of such products.
