Choose the right photoinitiators and oligomers to enhance the properties of your coatings

At Comindex we offer a broad range of photoinitiators and oligomers from our represented company Double Bond Chemical.

Below, allow us to introduce you to some of the photoinitiators and oligomers that are REACH registered:

Radical UV curing photoinitiators, which undergo unimolecular dissociation into radicals from the excited state (also known as Type I photoinitiators).

  • DOUBLECURE® 173. A highly reactive photoinitiator for clear coatings, as it is essentially non-yellowing. Its main applications include inks, as well as coatings for wood, metal and plastic and UV-cured adhesives. It is often combined with DOUBLECURE® 184 in applications such as varnishes, primers and lacquers for wood, paints for plastics, metal and leather.
  • DOUBLECURE® 184. This is the recommended photoinitiator when yellowing needs to be avoided, and it is also less sensitive to air during curing than Doublecure® 173. In addition to the aforementioned applications, alone or in combination with DOUBLECURE® 173, it can be used in UV-cured adhesives, screen printing and offset inks.
  • DOUBLECURE® 1819. This is the benchmark coating when a pigmented coating –especially white– is required; for transparent systems used outdoors combined with UV stabilisers. It is particularly recommended for coatings on wood, metal and plastic, overprint varnishes, offset inks, screen printing and 3D prints.

Cationic UV curing photoinitiators, which initiate the polymerisation reaction by means of an ionic – generally cationic – mechanism, and they offer the advantage of not being inhibited by atmospheric oxygen. They are primarily used for ring-opening (epoxy).

  • DOUBLECURE® 1176 and DOUBLECURE® 1190. Cationic photoinitiators that are used to induce the polymerisation of epoxides and other cationically polymerisable materials. They are particularly recommended for thin and transparent coatings on metal, plastic, paper and glass.

Oligomers

  • DOUBLEMER® 87N: A tin-free hexafunctional acrylate oligomer. It provides low shrinkage, high hardness, resistance to yellowing and excellent adhesion to ABS and PC. Its main applications include: offset printing and rotogravure, screen printing and direct or reverse roller coatings.
  • DOUBLEMER® 528N: A hexafunctional acrylate oligomer. It provides low shrinkage, rapid UV or EB curing and excellent adhesion to ABS, as well as resistance to scratches and stains, particularly from markers. Its main applications include: offset printing and rotogravure, screen printing and direct or reverse roller coatings, anti-scratch and stain-resistant coatings for plastics and wood fillers.
  • DOUBLEMER® 236: It provides excellent wet lithographic performance and pigment wetting properties. Films cured with UV or EB light from Doublermer® 236 exhibit good adhesion to metals, plastics and paper. Its main applications include: wet lithographic inks for paper, plastics and metal, adhesion promoters for coatings on metals, plastics and paper, lithographic overprint varnishes, postformable inks and inks for indirect contact food packaging.
  • DOUBLEMER® 245: It provides the appropriate hydrophilic-lipophilic balance needed for excellent wet lithography, combined with high reactivity when cured with UV or EB light. Lithographic inks based on Doublemer®245 exhibit excellent printing qualities, including excellent ink transfer from the printing plate to the blanket roller and then to the substrate, excellent dot definition and suitable rheological properties. Its main applications include: fast-curing lithographic inks, clear varnishes and additives to enhance lithographic performance, dot definition and rheological properties.
  • DOUBLEMER® 246: It provides excellent wet lithographic performance and pigment wetting properties. Doublemer® 246 films cured with UV or EB exhibit excellent adhesion to metals, plastics and paper. Its main applications include: wet lithographic inks for paper, plastics and metal, adhesion promoters for coatings on metals, plastics and paper, lithographic overprint varnishes and postformable inks.
  • DOUBLEMER® 287: It provides suitable hydrophilic-lipophilic balance as needed for excellent wet lithography with high reactivity when cured with UV light or an electron beam. Its main applications include: fast-curing lithographic inks, clear varnishes and inks for indirect contact food packaging. Lithographic inks based on Doublemer 287 also exhibit excellent printing qualities, including excellent ink transfer from the printing plate to the blanket roller and then to the substrate, excellent dot definition and suitable tack and rheological properties.
