Long-lasting antimicrobial protection on plastics

The chemistry of ionic silver in the Bactiblock additive delivers long-lasting antimicrobial protection in a range of formulations, such as plastics, coatings, building materials, adhesives, polymers and so on.

This antimicrobial additive – distributed by Comindex – contains ionic silver as the active ingredient absorbed on a clay or amorphous glass surface. This allows for even, controlled release of silver ion, enhancing the durability of its effect.

In order to demonstrate the durability of antimicrobial properties on plastics containing Bactiblock they have been subject to various tests: accelerated UV-light aging process and water immersion tests. The results obtained have proved to be highly satisfactory and have shown that the antimicrobial effect remains active even after exposing the surfaces to the aforesaid tests.

The conditions under which the tests were conducted followed the standards developed by the Society of International sustaining growth for Antimicrobial Articles (SIAA):

  • UV-light aging treatment: consisted of exposing the plastics to UV light during 2000h, simulating the effect of the sun light on their surfaces.
  • Water resistance test: the sample is immersed in water at 50 ºC for 60 hours.

All combinations of antimicrobial additives and polymers have successfully overcome the microbial activity required according to the standards mentioned.
