Microbial innovation: probiotic detergents

Probiotic detergents represent a sustainable innovation in cleaning products. Following the approval on 2 March of the proposed amendment to Regulation (EU) 2026/405, the use of microorganisms in detergents will be subject to specific requirements designed to ensure safety, traceability and efficacy. The key provisions of Annex II are summarised below.

Under this proposed amendment, the use of microorganisms in detergents is governed by Annex II, which includes the following key requirements:

  1. Identification: Strains must originate from recognised culture collections and be characterised by whole genome sequencing (WGS), with the genus, species and strain identification code specified.
  2. Safety: Pathogenic microorganisms (e.g., E. coli, Salmonella spp., Staphylococcus aureus, etc.) are prohibited.
  3. Safety: Products must not contain GMOs (genetically modified organisms).
  4. Antibiotic Resistance: Microorganisms must demonstrate susceptibility to each of the five classes of antibiotics.
  5. Microbial Count: Minimum concentration of ≥ 1 × 10⁵ CFU/g.
  6. Stability: The bacterial count after 18 months must remain at ≥ 1 × 10⁴ CFU/g.
  7. Toxicity: Safety for human health and the environment must be demonstrated through a risk assessment.
  8. Efficacy: The effectiveness of the microorganisms must be demonstrated through testing carried out by accredited laboratories.
  9. Claims: Products may not be described or marketed as Disinfectant or Antimicrobial unless they comply with Regulation (EU) No 528/2012.
  10. Testing Laboratories: Laboratories carrying out the above assessments and tests must be accredited.

The use of probiotics in cleaning products continues to grow as a more environmentally friendly and effective alternative to traditional cleaners. This proposed amendment helps ensure that microorganism-based detergents are safe, effective and fully traceable.
